What Your Job Will Be LikeThe Interns for Security, Arms Control, and Force Protection Engineering (iSAFE) Institute is one of the premier Intern Institutes at Sandia National Laboratories.
We are seeking outstanding, energetic and passionate undergraduate students majoring in Information Technology, or related fields of study.
Our Interns will work on high-caliber, cohesive teams to support programs and projects related to the United States National Security Missions.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Work with your team in designing, developing, implementing, testing, and delivering advanced data processing and exploitation IT solutions
- Work with your team in designing, developing, solutions related to our national security missions
- Work in a collaborative and learning environment and assume significant responsibilities for assisting in the delivery of first-of-a-kind IT solutions and data visualization methods to solve challenging technical problems for national security needs
- Utilize your knowledge, skills, and abilities to deliver quick and accurate solutions to complex and nationally significant problems
- Develop new skills that focus on addressing needed capabilities and services for our projects
- Contribute to information diagnosis and review in support of our national security mission projects
- Contribute to reports on technical topics
- Help to identify and implement new technologies to solving complex technical problems
- Collaborate with other Sandia National Laboratories Interns on shared projects
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range
At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited undergraduate program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
Qualifications We Desire
- Working knowledge and understanding of a computing or information technology field
- A U.S. Government granted security clearance
- Self-motivated, hard-working, detail-oriented, and thorough
- Ability to work well in a team environment
- Experience with the following: Software solutions and architecture (e.g. Web Development)
- Experience with software testing, planning, execution, and documentation
- Experience with database technology

About Our Team
The Interns for Security, Arms Control, and Force Protection Engineering (iSAFE) institute provides students the opportunity to develop next-generation systems for compelling national security missions. This can include work on complex and challenging problems to lower the risk posed by high-consequence events, such a nuclear and biological proliferation, terrorist threats, catastrophic incidents, and potentially destabilizing events. Projects range from small R&D efforts to large, multidisciplinary team collaborations on complex systems. The mission of iSAFE is to contribute to national security through the effective use of science, technology, and full-spectrum system solutions to lower the risk posed by high-consequence events. iSAFE's objectives include establishment of pipeline of highly skilled and competent interns for possible future employment at Sandia, obtaining valuable assistance with the organization's projects and tasks, developing leadership and networking opportunities, and fulfilling a corporate commitment to social responsibility.

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
