Job Summary
The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing educational and career guidance by assisting students with planning schedules, following the course curriculum for specific majors, helping students determine appropriate educational and career readiness solutions by defining and implementing a success plan, following through and tracking the advancement of students to ensure that the overall university experience is effective and efficient, and providing support in the student's career, personal and social development.
Job Duties
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Advise students about academic requirements and the selection of courses
- Disseminate information on institutional policies and procedures
- Integrate a strengths-based advising model with other advising models
- Maintain systematic and frequent contact with advisees
- Teach Orientation sectionals
- Serve as a Second Year Experience (SYE) Coach
- Maintain accurate records and collect data relevant to academic achievement, retention, and matriculation
- Refer students to specialized staff when needed, e.g., counseling, financial aid, career development, disability services, etc.
- Engage in professional development activities
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field
Experience:
- 3 years of experience in education
- Computer literacy and analytical skills
- Ability to demonstrate commitment in a student-centered environment
Other Preferences for Consideration
Master's Degree in Higher Education or related field with 2 years experience in education
Experience working with post-secondary students
Teaching experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Demonstrated initiative and follow-through skills; tact, diplomacy, and collaborative effort when working with students, parents, faculty, staff and administrators
Excellent communication skills: written, oral, presentation
Ability to manage large student caseloads (advising/Second Year Experience)
Knowledge and familiarity with information technology and its use in academic advising
Knowledge and principles, practices, and ethics of undergraduate advising a plus
